Dr Richard Leakey says African initiatives key to conservation
Category: General, Rangers | Date: Apr 16 2007 | By: admin
Dr Richard Leakey, Chairman of WildifeDirect, discusses a new way to get help directly to conservationists in Africa working in isolated and often dangerous conditions.
Dr Leakey is credited with putting an end to the slaughter of elephants in Kenya in the 1980s and has taken on the cause of Congo’s Mountain Gorillas. Mountain Gorillas are critically endangered with only 700 individuals remaining in the world; about 380 of these are in the Virunga Volcanoes Conservation Area, shared by Congo, Rwanda and Uganda.

As an MS degree holder in conservation biology, it is finally good to see an organization doing hands on conservation, and not just more research to feed our hungry egos. I always asked my colleagues what good such a heavy focus on research was when the wildlife and forests we were studying probably wasn’t going to be around much longer? I’ve never gotten a satisfactory answer. Too many conservation NGO’s are ineffective with bloated administrations, wasteful projects, infighting, and business as usual like so many other “save the world” groups. Finally, a conservation organization focused on the business of real conservation and stopping the massacre of wildlife, and finally good to see finances going to the rangers putting their lives on the line. This format is very effective because it allows people to see firsthand who is doing the work from the field. Great job, keep up the great work.
