Tackling the Hippo slaughter – Part 1
Category: Crises | Date: Sep 25 2006 | By: admin
The Advance force was deployed in its entirety along the northern shores of Lake Edward to tackle the massive explosion of hippo poaching these last two months by Mai Mai rebels. The three troops were sent to Muramba (in the Central Sector), and Ishango and Kyavinyonge (Northern Sector). It seems that the Mai Mais have largely disipated into the country side, leaving the skeletons of about 150 hippos behind. There was no contact between the rebels and the Advance Force, which is a disappointment but due largely to the logistical difficulties of moving around such a huge lake. Certainly if we had had a rapid vessel for the Lake (wooden dugout with a decent 80 horse power outboard) the rangers would probably have caught them in the early stages of the hippo slaughter. Next time…

Please help save the Hippos from further slaughter. The Hippos of the Virunga will have disappeared by December of 2006 if action is not taken.

Hi Juliet! Many thanks for your message. We desperately need the UN to move as fast as possible after the elections to move the Mai Mai out of the park. There are other other armed groups within the park that also need to be evacuated, but the Mai Mai hiding out at Cyondo are currently proving to be the greatest threat to the hippo population and need to be removed as soon as possible. Besides, intervention against the Mai Mai will probably act as a catalyst…
MONUC have talked of being able to re-launch operations towards the end of the second week after the elections. We just need to make sure this happens….
