Trouble brewing in the North

Unfortunately, the Advance force has to be pulled out of the Lake Edward area, despite a feeling of unfinished work.  The slaughter of hippos continues.  There’s a crisis developing in the northern forests of the park with the arrival of a large group of NALU rebels (more rebels…).  The NALU is the term used in Congo for Ugandan rebels perhaps better known as the ADF.  They are as brutal with unarmed civilians as they are cowardly when faced by armed law enforcement personel Continue Reading »

Tackling the Hippo slaughter – Part 1

The Advance force was deployed in its entirety along the northern shores of Lake Edward to tackle the massive explosion of hippo poaching these last two months by Mai Mai rebels.  The three troops were sent to Muramba (in the Central Sector), and Ishango and Kyavinyonge (Northern Sector).  It seems that the Mai Mais have largely disipated into the country side, leaving the skeletons of about 150 hippos behind.  There was no contact between the rebels and the Advance Force, which is a disappointment but due largely to the logistical difficulties of moving around such a huge lake.  Certainly if we had had a rapid vessel for the Lake (wooden dugout with a decent 80 horse power outboard) the rangers would probably have caught them in the early stages of the hippo slaughter.  Next time…

African Parks reacts to Guardian article

“Desperate times call for desperate measures” says Lawrence Anthony from the Earth Organisation in a report published by the Guardian on the 13th September 2006.  But does this really involve the blatant disregard for fundamental human rights, and will Mr Anthony’s deal with the LRA have any real impact on the ground?  The recent article has provoked a strong response from the African Parks Foundation, keen to set the record straight….
